Monday, February 13, 2012Submitted by Susan Hengen, Recreation ProgrammerFebruary 20 is Family Day in Saskatchewan and the forecast looks fantastic! With temperatures expected to hover around -4 C, what an ideal time to get out and have some active family fun! Canadian kids spend an average of 6-7 hours a day in front of a screen (TV, computers, video games and cell phones). That's 4-5 hours more than recommended levels. Screen time is one of the leading contributors to inactivity among our children and youth. Research also shows that for every hour of screen time children and youth accumulate, they spend 20 minutes less time being physically active. Take the opportunity this Family Day to get your family out and about, enjoying an active day together!
Kipling Parks & Recreation, along with Southeast Connection Sport, Culture & Recreation District and the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture & Sport, is giving parents an opportunity to increase the physical activity levels of their children through the Active After School Program. FitKids is a physical activity opportunity each Monday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the Kipling Community Centre for children and youth 4-12 years of age. There is no charge to participate – children must bring running shoes and a water bottle. The After Party is also an opportunity for children and youth (6-12 years) to blow off steam through active games at the Kipling Youth Centre on Wednedays from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Again, there is no charge to participate – just bring your running shoes and your enthusiasm!
Yoga For Teens is offered free of charge to students of Kipling School, grades 7-12 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:15-12:45 p.m. at the Community Centre, beginning Tuesday, January 31. Students are encouraged to bring their own yoga mats (some will be provided) and wear comfortable clothing. Yoga For Teens is made possible through financial contributions from the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport’s Community Initiatives Fund.
Youth Curling Program will continue on Wednesdays from 3:45-5:15 p.m. at the Kipling Curling Club. Dana Sproat and volunteers from the Kipling Curling Club will instruct and assist youth (Grades 4 and up) in all aspects of the sport. There is no charge to participate. Participants must bring their own brooms and sliders.
Older Adult Fitness Classes run each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Kipling Friendship Centre. Classes are 45 minutes in length and open to all interested participants. Classes feature light cardio activity, strength training and balance and flexibility exercises. There is no charge to attend – everyone welcome!
